Current Programs: Childhood Obesity Initiative

  • Pediatric Champion:  Joani Jack, M.D. (Chattanooga)

The Foundation is currently working with Dr. Joani Jack in Chattanooga to pilot the Childhood Obesity Initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to impact childhood obesity in Tennessee by providing a training curriculum for primary care providers and staff that will lead to a change in provider behavior and subsequent changes in patient behavior. Modeled after TNAAP’s highly successful START program, the Childhood Obesity Initiative will be piloted in 10 primary care practices serving children in the Hamilton County/Chattanooga area over the course of one year. Data documentation will lead to a determination in percent of well visits receiving evaluation and appropriate intervention. In order to properly evaluate and intervene, the Childhood Obesity Initiative will implement a training curriculum aimed at providers and staff. The curriculum will encompass all tools identified as necessary, including motivational interviewing techniques and training on correct documentation and coding. Dr. Jack will also build and lead an advisory panel of leading experts statewide to review and recommend evidence-based practices regarding childhood obesity and ultimately serve as a body of community contacts for the purpose of program expansion. The project closes December 2011.
